• St. Oswald's Way..the start

    Heavenfield to Kirkwhelpington (17½ miles)

Leaving the site of the battle of Heavenfield, where Christianity was given sway in Northumbria, is a wrench. A quiet corner of Northumberland where the sound of skylarks rising into the air on a fresh Spring like day dominate. How this rural scene must have contrasted with the bloody scars of battle now smoothed by time into a rolling landscape with the church at the highest point, said to have been constructed at the summit where Oswald raised his standard.

The walk ahead has been long in the planning and now has begun...the 97 mile route beckons. From Heavenfield near Chollerford in the south to the stunning Holy Island of Lindisfarne in the north, scenic river valleys, hills, attractive villages, forest, farmland, high moorland, castles, coastline and islands are encountered throughout the length. A walk of contrasts and interest throughout that stimulates the mind and senses.
