About me

304

  With a background in Education, I qualified in the 1980s and taught primary school children from Infants to Juniors. The opportunity to compliment my interest in travel arrived with The Commonwealth League for Teacher Exchanges' . A time in New Zealand drew me into a lifestyle that revolved around 'tramping' in pristine environments.

  Travel on all continents (aside from Antarctica) has opened the eyes to landscapes and cultures that may previously have been the preserve of the well heeled. Now the advent of cheap air travel and mass communication has allowed exploration of more remote areas and less visited countries.

Have you gazed on naked grandeur
where there’s nothing else to gaze on,
Set pieces and drop-curtain scenes galore,
Big mountains heaved to heaven, which the blinding sunsets blazon,
Black canyons where the rapids rip and roar?
Have you swept the visioned valley
with the green stream streaking through it,
Searched the Vastness for a something you have lost?
Have you strung your soul to silence?
Then for God’s sake go and do it;
Hear the challenge, learn the lesson, pay the cost.

  From ‘Call of the wild’ by Robert Service (1874 – 1958)
